New World Home Cooking
1411 Route 212, Saugerties; 845-246-0900
If the New World Home Cooking Co. in Saugerties had a motto, it would be "Eat, drink and be merry!"
This festive fusion restaurant, bar and music venue embodies that sentiment by offering a carefree atmosphere for all ages and walks of life.
Vibrant, slightly abstract artwork a la Henri Matisse adds color to the already bright golden walls of the restaurant and bar. (The works are provided by local artists Justin Love and Laurie Goodheart).
The large, well-attended bar is stocked with draft beer from nearby New York breweries.
Minty El Mojitos! (rum with lime, mint, turbinado sugar and soda), Caipirinha (sugar cane brandy with lime and raw sugar on the rocks) and other mixed drinks offer an alternative to the brewskies.
The menu is a smorgasbord of flavors, embodying the concept that New World takes the best of the old and delivers with a punch. A favorite dish is the spicy blackened string beans.
There is also a refreshingly large selection of meatless options including a build-your-own ÔÔThai Green Curry StewÕÕ with the option of adding chicken, seafood or tofu.
Food is served right up until 11 p.m., so even perpetually late patrons can grab a meal if theyÕre in by a quarter till.
In a large, dark room behind the bar, various bands and musicians gather several times a week, providing a live soundtrack for New World.
On Wednesdays, musical entertainment rotates between an old-time fiddle jam and a Celtic song circle, each attracting anywhere from five to 15 musicians per session.
Groove to oldies
On Friday nights, the place heats up as dancers groove to good old-fashioned rock ÕnÕ roll. You may even find restaurant owner Ric Orlando, the musician, celebrity chef, restaurateur who sings and rocks out, proving that this restaurant was designed to be a place to be yourself and have fun.
